Activities - Week 7 - Tuesday

Good morning, Year 6!

Well done for remembering to check the blog today. If you didn't check the blog yesterday, please look at Monday's post now: https://cabotschoolyear6.blogspot.com/2020/05/activities-week-7-monday.html. Please check the blog every day from Monday - Thursday this week and complete the learning that you can. If you get stuck, leave us a comment or ask us for help when we call you.

GPS

Remember what we were practising yesterday:

Write out these sentences, then underline the subject and circle the object
(Challenge: today, can you also label the verb that the subject is doing?)

Literacy

Today we are going to write the next two paragraphs of "Stuck", the story you planned yesterday. This will be the build up and the problem.

Check your plan from Monday to remind yourself what is going to happen next. After you write the next two paragraphs, someone or something should be stuck somewhere... We will finish the story tomorrow.

Target: can you include some dialogue in your writing today (characters talking to each other)?
Remember, when we include speech in our writing:
- we put inverted commas around what the characters say
- we punctuate what the characters say
- we start a new line each time a new character speaks

Like this:

"Dad!" shouted the boy impatiently. "What are we going to have for lunch?"
"I don't know," his father replied. "What are you going to cook?"

Reading

Please remember that it is really important to try to keep reading every day. As well as any books, magazines or other reading materials you might have at home, here is a reminder of some of the activities you can be doing each day:

1. If you haven't done Ms Davies's brilliant fluency lesson from last week yet, then you can see the video for it here. I really like this story (but it has quite a nasty ending...)

2. There are loads of fantastic books available to read online on the GetEpic website - we can see that some of you have been using this (well done!) but we would really like to see more of you reading on there. To log on and see how many great books they have, go to www.getepic.com/students and type in our class code: qav6098

3. There are also some brilliant dual language books available at https://uk.mantralingua.com/homereading. These are written both in English and another language, which makes them great to read with families who don't only speak English - the list includes Somali, Arabic, Urdu and many other languages. You may need an adult to help you fill in the form to get to the books.

Word Aware

If you didn't have a go at the game we posted yesterday, have a go today. Can you come up with an equivalent of 'Sumaya is a scientist in Switzerland' for each letter of the alphabet?

Maths

We're going over our fractions learning this week. If you need help, please leave us a comment.

Starter

Log onto Mathletics and try the 'Simplifying Fractions' activity that you've been set.

Main activity

Watch the video for Week 3, Lesson 2: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/. Think about any questions you are asked and take part in any practice activities. Then, complete the worksheet (you can do this by writing the answers in your books - you do not need to print the worksheets).

If you can't access the worksheet on the website, you can download it here:
Tuesday's Maths Worksheet.

Check your work against the answers: Tuesday's answers.

Topic

R.E.

Watch the three videos about Ramadan, fasting and the story of Abdullah: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zdgrcqt.

Pick either Activity One to complete or Activity Three. (You do not need to print the worksheets to complete the activities - they can be completed on paper or in your exercise books.)

PSHE

These are very strange times that we are living in. We'd like you to reflect on a few things about life during lockdown. Either reflect on these questions yourself, or talk to a member of your family about them. If you want to, you can answer your questions in your books. The full set of questions is available here: Lockdown PSHE Questions; these are the particular questions we'd like you to focus on:

1. So far, how long have you been in lockdown?
2. Do you remember what you first thought when you heard that schools were closing? Why did you think that?
3. How have your feelings changed?
4. What has been your favourite moment of lockdown so far?
5. What's been your least favourite?
6. What do you think you will remember most about this time?
7. What are you most looking forward to when things return to normal?

Have a brilliant day and remember to check the blog tomorrow!

Term 6 - Language Skills

Year 6 have been practising their -ant, -ance, -ancy and -ent, -ence and -ency spellings recently. One fun way we found to practise was by playing a matching game. Children had to turn over a word card and a definition card and see if they matched. If they did, the children had to try to spell the word without looking at the card. If they were correct, they kept the pair of cards. The winner was the player with the most pairs!

Term 6 - Writing

In literacy lessons, we have been learning about part of S. F. Said's book, 'Phoenix'. We read an edited version of the first chapter, and over the next few weeks, created our own action stories based on that.

Term 5 - More Maths

We used the double-sided counters to explore the game of Nim-7 . We enjoyed working out if there was a way of always winning, whether you were Player 1 or Player 2.  Once we'd explored that, we started asking ourselves other questions: "What would happen if we had an even number of counters?" "What if you could take more counters at a time?" "What if you used the same rules, but played with more people?" Each group picked a question to investigate further, and started to think about how to record what they had found out. Year 6 worked well in partnership with each other and really thought deeply about the maths behind the investigation.
