Term 2: Sparkle Day

Yesterday was a bittersweet moment for Year 6: it was our last Sparkle Day at Cabot! All the children sparkled throughout the day, and we especially enjoyed eating our lunch together in the hall. We pulled crackers, told each other jokes and tried on the fake moustaches that many children had inside their crackers!  It was a truly special day and we will remember it for the rest of the year.

Term 2: WOW Day

In a slight change to how Cabot normally holds Wow Days, Year 5 and 6 decided to celebrate the end of their China topic, rather than the start! We had our Wow Day this Monday; it was fantastic seeing all the children celebrate their learning by wearing outfits with red or yellow on them to school. We divided our classes into three groups in the morning. Each group had an opportunity to participate in three activities: making spring rolls, investigating Chinese artefacts, and creating our own oracle bone tablets from clay.  In the afternoon, Year 5 made Chinese fans, whilst Year 6 made paper lanterns. Then, we had a real treat at the end of the day: we were invited to watch the KS1 performance! What an excellent start to the last week of term!

Term 2: Science Learning

We had a great time finishing up our science learning about materials by teaming up for an 'escape room' game last week! Each team worked in partnership to solve different clues, using all of their learning about the properties of materials! We all felt really confident with the definitions of properties of materials, processes for separating materials and reversible and irreversible changes. We realised we still need to find out more about insulators and conductors of heat and electricity, which we will learn more about later in the year!

Term 2: Lantern Parade

We had a fantastic time celebrating 100 years of cinema in Bristol yesterday evening! Cabot children and their parents played Top Trumps with a deck of cards featuring local cinemas, which was designed by another local school. Fuelled by our free hot chocolates (thank you, Ruth and Pete!), we then paraded our lanterns through Castle Park, stopping at the locations of Bristol's former cinemas. In each location, we watched a short film, representing the films cinema-goers would have watched when the cinemas were still standing.  Our lanterns looked amazing in the darkness, and we loved watching the old Mickey Mouse cartoons! Cabot children have learnt a lot about the cultural heritage of Bristol; we've really enjoyed taking part in this project. Thank you to all the parents and staff who came and celebrated with us!  You can learn more about the project here .

Term 2: Chinese Visitors

As part of our topic learning about China, Year 5 and 6 were visited by Tony, Melanie and Dr Huang last week! They taught us some Mandarin and Cantonese phrases, told us the story of the Chinese zodiac, and sang us a song about Chinese New Year. We ran out of time to practise using chopsticks, but we're looking forward to doing that soon! Thank you for visiting us and teaching us about Chinese New Year!
