Activities - Week 11 - Friday

Good morning, Year 6!

We're looking forward to seeing some of you at school on Wednesday and Thursday next week. If you're coming to school next week, we'll be sending you a letter by email later today. If you have any questions about the letter, please call school (or you can email us at year6.cabot@bristol-schools.uk).

Work will be posted on the blog as normal all week. Children who don't come to school will still be called by someone from Cabot. If you need to speak to us, you can call school, leave us a comment on the blog, or email us.

Maths

How many of these challenges can you complete? Post your answers in the comments below! (Or email us at year6.cabot@bristol-schools.uk).

Literacy

Follow along with the next video lesson on writing a persuasive text:

Word Aware
Play Snake Word!

You can play this game by yourself or with any number of other people. All you need is some paper and something to write with (if possible, choose a different colour pen or pencil for everyone playing).

Pick a person to start. They write any word on one side of the paper (you could set a rule that it has to be at least a five-letter word, or a word to do with a particular topic (e.g. food, weather, travel), if you wanted to challenge yourselves). Your next word must start with the last letter of their word, and you write it as if it were part of the same word. (See my example below!)

You can set a time limit for each person to write their word, or you can lose points if you repeat a word, or you can keep going until you run out of paper. I could have kept going with mine, but I chose to see if I could go all the way back to the first word I started with. Can you work out the words I used? (Answers below the photo!)

Here's my snake word: eggoatomatoescubappledgemptyakiteaglemailemonutornadopticalyricsugarhubarbrainskippingrinincompoopotatovalimousinevilycramazingrunge

(egg, goat, tomatoes, scuba, apple, edge, empty, yak, kite, eagle, email, lemon, nut, tornado, optical, lyrics, sugar, rhubarb, brains, skipping, grin, nincompoop, potato, oval, limousine, evil, lycra, amazing, grunge)

Topic

Computing

Read and watch the information on this page: How does the internet work? Can you sketch an explanation of how the internet works? Can you simplify the glossary, so that someone younger than you understands it? How would the world be different without the internet?

Library

JK Rowling is releasing chapters of her new book, The Ickabog, for free! She's also running a competition for children to illustrate the book. Check out the book and the competition on The Ickabog website. (Chapter One is here!)

Have a lovely weekend!

    1. You are quick off the mark this morning Amira - well done!

Your answers for 1-3 look good.

Challenge 4: We could use algebra here. Let's say the shirt costs x pounds. The jacket costs £25 more, so that would be x + 25. The total is £87, so then we have:

      x + x + 25 = 87

Does this help you to work out what the value of x is?

Challenge 5: Yes, the cube has the same value each time. Clue: what is the difference between the two pictures (what shapes have been added in the second picture?) And how much does the mass go up by because of this? This should help you to work out what the value of a cone is.

Term 6 - Language Skills

Year 6 have been practising their -ant, -ance, -ancy and -ent, -ence and -ency spellings recently. One fun way we found to practise was by playing a matching game. Children had to turn over a word card and a definition card and see if they matched. If they did, the children had to try to spell the word without looking at the card. If they were correct, they kept the pair of cards. The winner was the player with the most pairs!

Term 6 - Writing

In literacy lessons, we have been learning about part of S. F. Said's book, 'Phoenix'. We read an edited version of the first chapter, and over the next few weeks, created our own action stories based on that.

Term 5 - More Maths

We used the double-sided counters to explore the game of Nim-7 . We enjoyed working out if there was a way of always winning, whether you were Player 1 or Player 2.  Once we'd explored that, we started asking ourselves other questions: "What would happen if we had an even number of counters?" "What if you could take more counters at a time?" "What if you used the same rules, but played with more people?" Each group picked a question to investigate further, and started to think about how to record what they had found out. Year 6 worked well in partnership with each other and really thought deeply about the maths behind the investigation.
