Miss Davies' performance poetry family task - Week 3

Hello everyone!

This is week 3 of Miss Davies' family poetry challenge. If you missed week 1, it's on the blog here:

https://cabotschoolyear6.blogspot.com/2020/04/miss-davies-performance-poetry-family.html

and week 2 is on the blog here:

https://cabotschoolyear6.blogspot.com/2020/04/miss-davies-performance-poetry-family_20.html.

If you need some inspiration for performance, Ms Tupman's aunt and uncle had a go at last week's poem, 'The Boneyard Rap': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYMP-pN_8Tc&feature=youtu.be.

Remember that this is a challenge for everyone in the family to get involved with learning and performing! Here's some fabulous advice from Michael Rosen about how to make your performance excellent: https://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/children/2017/michael-rosen-s-top-tips-for-performing-poems-and-stories/.

Here's this week's poem:

Friends by Benjamin Zephaniah

Funky monkey in the tree
I like it when you talk to me
What I really like the best
is when you bang upon my chest.

Slippery snake I am your mate
When all others hesitate
I’ll be there right by your side
I am known to slip and slide.

Hop along, croak croak, how ya doing frog?
No one understands our deep dialogue
People may laugh when they see us on the road
We must stick together
Monkey, snake, me, you and toad.

(You can hear Benjamin Zephaniah performing it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlBraBx3Br4 and you can see an excellent performance of it here (turn the volume up!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu8CgFxQjKY.)

Term 6 - Writing

In literacy lessons, we have been learning about part of S. F. Said's book, 'Phoenix'. We read an edited version of the first chapter, and over the next few weeks, created our own action stories based on that.

Term 6 - Language Skills

Year 6 have been practising their -ant, -ance, -ancy and -ent, -ence and -ency spellings recently. One fun way we found to practise was by playing a matching game. Children had to turn over a word card and a definition card and see if they matched. If they did, the children had to try to spell the word without looking at the card. If they were correct, they kept the pair of cards. The winner was the player with the most pairs!

Term 6 - Music Week

For Music Week, we listened to 'The Carnival of the Animals'. Year 6 focused on 'The Aviary'. After discussing the piece of music, we looked at images of birds and then collaborated as a table to create our own bold, beautiful birds. Don't they look great?
