Rotary Club Competition

Every year, we take part in our local Rotary Club's writing competition. This year the theme was 'connections'. Year 6 wrote a wide range of responses to this theme, from poems to stories!

Here are our five winners, and the overall winning poem:

Connections In Everything - Asma

I see connections, some I can’t,
Connections in the human body, blood vessels and arteries,
Some connections invisible to me and you,
Some clear as a bright sunny day afar.

I see connections, some I can’t
Connections in roads, junctions, dual highways and more.
Some connections we need forever,
Others just for a while.

I see connections, other’s I can’t,
Connections to the world,
Politics and others, some in ways that may seem strange,
Ground-breaking scientists who paved the way.

Connections are everywhere,
Just remember, links back down your family tree,
Connections in wires and industries,
Connections in many ways too.

Although you may argue that some connections aren’t
Necessary,
Although you may be baffled at the thought of it,
Everything is linked, even distantly.

Don’t you know,
A long time ago,
Chickens were related to dinosaurs?
There’s much in the past and future we don’t know and all it goes to show is...

Connections in me,
Connections in you,
Connections can be found anywhere and everywhere as long as you look hard enough.

Some are simple,
Some are incomprehensible,
Some in the form of chemicals and DNA,
Some in the bonds of friendship, in a way.

Today I’ve told you,
In the form of writing,
Something that is to be cherished,
For generations and generations, forever and forever, without end.

Term 6 - Language Skills

Year 6 have been practising their -ant, -ance, -ancy and -ent, -ence and -ency spellings recently. One fun way we found to practise was by playing a matching game. Children had to turn over a word card and a definition card and see if they matched. If they did, the children had to try to spell the word without looking at the card. If they were correct, they kept the pair of cards. The winner was the player with the most pairs!

Term 6 - Writing

In literacy lessons, we have been learning about part of S. F. Said's book, 'Phoenix'. We read an edited version of the first chapter, and over the next few weeks, created our own action stories based on that.

Term 5 - More Maths

We used the double-sided counters to explore the game of Nim-7 . We enjoyed working out if there was a way of always winning, whether you were Player 1 or Player 2.  Once we'd explored that, we started asking ourselves other questions: "What would happen if we had an even number of counters?" "What if you could take more counters at a time?" "What if you used the same rules, but played with more people?" Each group picked a question to investigate further, and started to think about how to record what they had found out. Year 6 worked well in partnership with each other and really thought deeply about the maths behind the investigation.
