King Midas and the Golden Touch - The Story Home Children's Audio ...

Hello Year 6!

It's Mr Town here. I hope you are all doing ok! It was really nice to see some of you while I was making some deliveries with Mr Shamsudin and Mrs Holian, and it has been great to catch up with others on the phone.

There has been some lovely sunshine over the past few days; don't forget that even though we have been asked to stay at home as much as possible, we are still allowed to go outside for some exercise like a walk or a run once a day, as long as we make sure that:
  • it is with the same people that we live with, and we don't meet up with other friends or family
  • we stay 2 metres away from anyone else who is outside
If you can't get outside, or if you just want to get some extra indoor exercise, remember that every day at 9.00am Joe Wicks is streaming a new P.E. workout on his Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/thebodycoachtv, which you can also watch later. (I have been doing this myself - I am hoping that by the end of the isolation period I will be able to do the squats without my legs hurting the next day...)

Weekly Activities

Literacy

Firstly, don't forget to keep updating your diary each day. Remember that it doesn't just have to be about what you have done - it can also describe any thoughts or feelings that you would like to write down.

For our other writing this week, we are going to continue the learning we started at school when we were talking about balanced arguments (also known as discussion texts).

To refresh your memory of how this text type works, you could watch this video:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zm3nvcw

Then choose one of these questions to write a balanced argument about. Remember to introduce the topic you are discussing, then to give some arguments for and some arguments against:
  • Should the voting age be lowered to 10?
  • Should children be allowed to choose their own bedtime?
  • Should cars be banned from the city centre?
  • Should children be allowed mobile phones in school?
Or you can make up your own question to discuss!

Maths

Starter

Lots of you have already played this game at school that lets you apply your knowledge of ratio: https://mathsnacks.com/ratio-rumble.html

Main activity

Here is a grid of four "boxes":
Square divided into four.
You must choose four different digits from 19 and put one in each box. For example:
Square divide into four, with 5,2,1 & 9 in the sections.
This gives four two-digit numbers:

52
(reading along the 1st row)
19
(reading along the 2nd row)
51
(reading down the left hand column)
29
(reading down the right hand column)
In this case their sum is 151.

Try a few examples of your own.
Is there a quick way to tell if the total is going to be even or odd?

Your challenge is to find four different digits that give four two-digit numbers which add to a total of 100.

How many ways can you find of doing it?

Reading

Don't forget that you can hear one of David Walliams' World's Worst Children stories each day on his website: https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/

Make sure you are reading every day. If you run out of things to read, try a story from another country: https://worldstories.org.uk/ or listening to an audiobook: https://www.storynory.com/ or https://stories.audible.com/start-listen.

Additional reading resources:

https://www.heleneboudreau.com/drawmemore (read 'Mason and the Mega-nauts' for free and draw along with the chapters. There are no illustrations yet - you can send yours to the author, and they might be included!)
http://www.mousecircus.com/videos/ (Neil Gaiman reads the brilliant 'The Graveyard Book' and 'Coraline' (scroll down for Coraline - children who were in on Friday have already listened to the first two chapters of Coraline).)
https://www.kennedy-center.org/education/mo-willems/ (illustration classes with author Mo Willems)
https://www.worldbookday.com/resources/primary/ (explore book extracts and other activities)

Topic

Ancient Greece

In the story, King Midas makes a wish that everything he touches will turn to gold. However, he soon finds out that this is not as good as it sounds...

Can you write your own story about a character who wishes for something, but when the wish comes true it turns into a problem?

(A couple of ideas in case you get stuck: someone wishes for a unlimited amount of junk food, or to play computer games 24 hours a day...)

Hope you all have a good week!

Remember that if you have any questions, you can contact us through the school office on 0117 377 2630 or at cabotp@bristol-schools.uk. Please make sure you are staying safe.

Ramadan and reading

Ramadan Mubarak, Year 6!  We know that Ramadan this year will be very different to any that you have experienced so far. Please watch this message from Bristol Muslim Strategic Leadership Group (BMSLG), the Mayor of Bristol and others - they very eloquently say all that we wish to say to you:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma3iNRImtbo .  We also have a few reading updates for you! For those of you who have been following along with Miss Davies' Family Performance Poetry Challenge, Ms Tupman's aunt and uncle have decided to join you! Here's their version of 'The Boneyard Rap':  https://youtu.be/RYMP-pN_8Tc . Finally, Miss Davies has made some reading lessons for you. Your parents should have received a text message with the link, but in case they didn't, you can access the lesson here:  https://youtu.be/GqMqvtIb0G4 . It will take you about 20 minutes to do, and there will be a new lesson next Wednesday. Activities - Week 12 - Monday

Good morning, Year 6! If you're joining us at school on Wednesday, then your most important job for today and tomorrow is to make sure you're eating dinner and going to bed at a sensible time, getting enough sleep and then waking up at the time you'll need to be waking up for school. Getting into a good routine now will make Wednesday easier! We'll be celebrating Empathy Day tomorrow, but there are things you could do all week to participate. See the information here for more details. We'd love to hear what you do to mark Empathy Day - you can either tell us in school on Wednesday or email us:  year6.cabot@bristol-schools.uk Maths Starter To get ready for today's lesson, spend at least 5 minutes playing Times Table Rock Stars.   Main Activity Today's lesson is about converting between finding a rule in algebra. First, watch this video and have a go at any of the questions in it: Then complete this worksheet: Monday&
