Term 2 - Local Learning Cinema Project

Year 6 have been working with Local Learning on a project to celebrate Bristol's film-making heritage.
We started off by visiting Castle Park at the start of the term. The Local Learning team took us on a tour to see where several cinemas used to stand - this was really interesting to us, because in Year 5 we learnt about the Bristol Blitz, and how the Castle Park area of the city has changed over time.

We then took part in a memory-sharing event, where we interviewed visitors to our school about their memories of the cinema. It was really interesting to learn about the experiences of people at the cinema!

Then, we had what some children described as, "The best two days of school ever!" Architecture students from UWE, along with local artist Tom McDonagh, worked with us to make and decorate lanterns showcasing some of our own favourite cinema memories! We can't wait for our lantern parade in December, when we will be able to share them with our families.

Term 6 - Writing

In literacy lessons, we have been learning about part of S. F. Said's book, 'Phoenix'. We read an edited version of the first chapter, and over the next few weeks, created our own action stories based on that.

Term 5 - Literacy

In Literacy, we read and wrote discussion texts about whether or not artefacts such as the Benin Bronzes should be returned to their countries of origin. To explore the issue, Year 6 took part in role-play activities and conscience alleys to share their opinions and understand how different people might feel about this topical issue. Year 6 showed great maturity in discussing this topic and were able to express their viewpoints with evidence and arguments to back themselves up.
