Year 6 2021-22

Year 6 have been working with Local Learning on a project to celebrate Bristol's film-making heritage.  We started off by visiting Castle Park at the start of the term. The Local Learning team took us on a tour to see where several cinemas used to stand - this was really interesting to us, because in Year 5 we learnt about the Bristol Blitz, and how the Castle Park area of the city has changed over time.  We then took part in a memory-sharing event, where we interviewed visitors to our school about their memories of the cinema. It was really interesting to learn about the experiences of people at the cinema! Then, we had what some children described as, "The best two days of school ever!" Architecture students from UWE, along with local artist Tom McDonagh, worked with us to make and decorate lanterns showcasing some of our own favourite cinema memories! We can't wait for our lantern parade in December, when we will be able to share them with our families. 

Year 6 have produced some incredible art work for Remembrance Day, using black card and pen to create silhouettes and messages, and tissue paper to create a stained glass effect. They also created their own frames, carefully measuring and then cutting out the 'pane', which was then used for their silhouette, so nothing was wasted!  These pieces of art have really brightened up our classroom, however they also serve an important purpose: reminding us of everyone affected by war.   

  Some of our children who speak English as an additional language have been working hard to learn about explanation texts. They really enjoyed this practical activity of making ice cream in a bag. Although their arms hurt from shaking the bag, they said that the ice cream was worth the effort!
