Year 6 2021-22

It's been a busy term for Year 6, but finally the SATs are over and summer is here! To celebrate, this week half the class went on a residential visit to the Forest of Dean, where they took part in a variety of team-building and outdoors challenges, and the other half of the class stayed at school.  The children who stayed at school spent the week thinking creatively to solve Maths problems, celebrated writing week by creating interviews around the theme "If I were famous it would be because..." and completed lots of mini-projects. One popular project involved creating our own planets, bringing together our science learning with some art skills.  The children used primary and secondary coloured pens to design a planet on a coffee filter, before taking the coffee filters outside. There, we sprayed the filters with water, and watched the colours mixing to create new secondary and tertiary colours. The children then named their planets, and have started to describe ...

What a busy week it's been for Year 6! Not only have we been busy writing some fantastic discussion texts, going for our weekly swimming lesson, and getting ready for the end of term, but we've also been working hard to prepare for the Maths Fair at the end of Maths Week! We had a LOT of fun designing and making games for the fair. We even upcycled some of the leftovers from the summer fair!  Putting the boxes our practice SATs papers came in to good use! Everyone worked together in small groups. Making 'Pin the tie on Mr Burton'! Lots of us mixed our own shades of paint, going for a real bespoke look! We were feeling the pressure, but luckily Miss Heeley came to help us out! We were so proud of ourselves when we saw our finished stall! Now...which class raised the most money?

Some of our fantastic athletes in Years 5 and 6 went to the Clip and Climb with Miss Heeley on Friday. They had so much fun! Everyone climbed all the way to the top. Would you? Absolutely exhausted!! Thank you for a fantastic trip, Miss Heeley!

We are very proud that some pupils in our class took part in a National Maths Competition this week. It was really tough - even Mrs Cartlidge couldn't answer all the questions in time! Pupils will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates for this round, and we will find out in the next couple of weeks whether the scores of any Cabot pupils were high enough to go through to the final round in February. Well done to all the children who took part!

We've had a wonderful first term in Year 6! We've started learning about our topic, the Shang Dynasty, and have come up with lots of questions we hope to research. In science, we're learning about materials, and we have been testing objects for their properties in class. As part of this, we recently explored the Science Garden. Some of us managed to use the pulley system to transport water in waterproof containers from one side of the garden to the other! Year 6 are keen performers, and we recently performed Michael Rosen's 'Chocolate Cake' in assembly; at the end of this week we'll be going to the Hippodrome to see him perform some of his poems - we can't wait! This year will be full of hard work and fun, and we can't wait
