Term 1 Maths

We began learning about Place Value in Maths last week. To start with, we revisited some key skills which we will need to use this term. We did this through a carousel of activities. The most popular activity was Place Value Castles! We used the dienes to build castles and calculated the value of our castles. Because we didn't have many thousand blocks, but had plenty of hundred squares, we had some great conversations around equivalence. We'll definitely have to repeat this activity when we come to revisit decimals!

Term 1 Literacy

Our first literacy unit is based around the story of The Emperor and the Nightingale . This is a classic story, which has many different versions. To help us learn the events in the narrative, we turned parts of the text into a playscript, which we then performed in small groups. We had a lot of fun thinking about how the lines should be delivered!

Term 1 Topic

We'll be learning about the Shang Dynasty for our Topic in Autumn. This means travelling back over 3,000 years in time! We looked at what this meant by making a timeline of other events (some of which we have also studied in previous years)! Children worked in partnership to sort themselves into chronological order.  We noticed that many of the events we had been given to order overlapped, and we talked about why this might be. Some of our cards were 'Ages', such as the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Other events were happening in different places. Whilst we're learning about the Shang Dynasty in Bristol, what do you think children in China might be learning about?

Term 1 Maths

For the first two weeks of term, we've been learning about geometry. We have learnt about different types of lines, angles, polygons and 3D shapes. We also learned how to calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids! One day this week, we came in to find that our tables had been covered in lots of different lines.  We worked in partnership to identify and label the polygons, lines and angles which had been created. We named the different types of angles, estimated their sizes and then used our angle checkers to see if we were right.

Welcome to a new year!

Welcome to a new Year 6 class! Today we had our class reward. (We were supposed to have it in July 2021, but we had to self-isolate at the end of term!)  The children brought in lots of food to share, including several Somali dishes. Everything was delicious!
